Retail giant Walmart is laying off 155 workers at its Charlotte office, citing “recent changes to Walmart’s business strategy,” according to a filing with state officials.
The Bentonville, Arkansas-based company said that the workers, located in a southwest Charlotte office park near Charlotte Douglas International Airport, will be cut on Sept. 20, according to the N.C. Department of Commerce.
Of the affected workers, 53 work remotely but are assigned to the facility. All affected employees can apply for open positions at other company facilities.
Walmart is providing the workers with support, including continued access to a career portal and severance pay, subject to eligibility requirements, after the conclusion of the paid transition period. The company said that there are no recall or bumping rights for the workers.
“We are eliminating some roles supporting our associate call center in Charlotte to better align our team with the volume of requests,” said company spokesman Nick DeMoss. “We have had discussions with associates who were directly affected and are working closely to help them navigate the path forward, including other opportunities within Walmart.”
Walmart has 214 stores in North Carolina, including 144 supercenters and 22 Sam’s Clubs. It employs more than 61,000 workers in the state, and has six distribution centers in North Carolina.
For its 2024 fiscal year, the company reported $648.1 billion in revenue and $15.5 billion in net income. It is the largest company in the world based on revenue.
