Walmart closing Charlotte office, offers relocations to Arkansas, San Francisco

Walmart is closing its regional office in Charlotte, asking many of the 267 workers there to relocate to its Bentonville, Arkansas, headquarters or a hub in the San Francisco Bay area, according to a notice filed with the state.

Wal-Mart will close its office at 2118 Water Ridge Parkway, where it has had an office since 2016.

“We do not expect all impacted associates to experience employment loss due to this event,” the company wrote. “We anticipate that many impacted associates will relocate or continue employment in a new position within the company before the end of a paid transition period.”

Employees that do not relocate or transition into a new position will be terminated June 13. Walmart told its affected employees of the plans on Tuesday and filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) with the state on the same day.

In September, Walmart laid of 155 workers at that same office, although some worked remotely. That layoff was related to call center employees and “changes to Walmart’s business strategy.”

All affected Walmart employees in Charlotte can apply for open positions at other Walmart facilities. Those who do not relocate or take other positions will be eligible for potential benefits including severance pay and help transitioning into a new job, according to the company.

Walmart employs almost 62,000 people in North Carolina at 214 retail locations, 1 fulfillment center and six distribution centers.
