State history museum taps Brad Wilson as interim chief

Brad Wilson, former chief executive officer of Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina, will be interim director of the N.C. Museum of History, the institution said Monday.

Wilson succeeds Ken Howard, who has led the museum since 2007 after working as a senior executive at Raleigh medical software companies, including A4 Health Systems and Medic Computer Systems.

Wilson joined Blue Cross in 1995, holding senior-level jobs before he was named CEO in 2010. He left in 2018 and has been a consultant in Raleigh since then. He previously practiced law in Caldwell County and later was general counsel for Gov. Jim Hunt.

The 200,000-square-foot history museum was completed in 1992, across Jones Street from the N.C. General Assembly in downtown Raleigh, serving as a collector of artifacts and materials related to the history of the state.

Plans call for an expanded and renovated museum. Project plans are still being finalized. The state has authorized $180 million for the project.

Wilson is a member of the museum’s foundation board, which includes former Salisbury Mayor Margaret Kluttz and former News & Observer Publisher Orage Quarles III.
