Germany-based Schott Phama is investing $371 million in Wilson to build a pharmaceutical production facility that will create 401 jobs, officials announced Monday.
It will be the first U.S. facility to manufacture pre-fillable polymer syringes, while adding to the nation’s supply of pre-fillable glass syringes, the company said in a release.
Schott Pharma has six U.S. manufacturing facilities producing drug containment solutions and delivery systems for biotech and pharmaceutical companies.
The Carl Zeiss Foundation in Jena, Germany, owns the company, which is a subsidiary of glass and glass ceramics producer Schott AG.
The average salary for jobs at the new Wilson facility is expected to be $57,868, about $5,600 more than the average wage in Wilson County. Wilson is 50 miles east of Raleigh.
“Schott Pharma’s $371 million capital investment and 401 high-wage jobs will strengthen our local economy,” N.C. Sen. Buck Newton said in a release. He cited the state’s pro-growth policies and a $30 million investment in a biologics training facility at Wilson Community College for helping attract jobs to Wilson County and eastern North Carolina.
Schott Pharma selected Wilson after conducting a nationwide search because of its proximity to the Research Triangle area and the local talent pool. Schott North America President Christopher Cassidy said the location would give the site a campus-like option.
The project qualified for a Job Development Investment Grant that could reimburse the company up to $4.9 million over 12 years. Schott must meet hiring and investment targets to receive the state incentives.
