Kansas City-based Railcrew Xpress, which provides transportation services for railroad crews, filed a notice with the state that it will lay off 87 workers across eight locations in North Carolina by Feb. 27.
Railcrew Xpress says it will close the eight sites because Jacksonville, Florida-based CSX Railroad canceled its contract with the company.
Rocky Mount, Hamlet and Charlotte account for job losses of 27, 25 and 18, respectively. Other job losses include two each in Wake, Pitt and Rutherford counties, seven in Cumberland and four in Brunswick County. All of the employees are listed as van drivers.
Railcrew Xpress announced related layoffs in the states of Florida and Georgia, according to news accounts.
Railcrew Xpress has more than 2,000 employees and operates in 25 states, according to its website. The company says it transports mostly train engineers and conductors operating freight railways. It says its service helps workers get to locations more efficiently than having the workers take a train to another location.
Company officials did not immediately respond to follow-up questions.
