Description
The cover story for our December issue was on Dan Winslow, who has recently taken over the helm of the $1.6 billion New Hanover Community Endowment. His job will be to spend about $80 million a year to make a difference in Wilmington. The story explores the controversy over the endowment, the selection of Winslow and how this endowment is just a huge amount of money that could change a community’s trajectory. BNC profiled our four Small Business of the Year winners, which were: a Johnston County construction company, a Davidson County trailer dealership, a Halifax County distillery and a Buncombe County malt house. A profile of North Carolina Central Chancellor Karrie Dixon and annual list of Top Doctors rounded out our feature stories. Trend stories highlighted a Guilford County family poinsettia farm; a move toward private road courses for car enthusiasts; PNC’s expanding footprint in the state; new NC Health Association leader; and how investors are putting money into a cure for the next pandemic. Our Point Taken column was on North Carolina’s growth in military spending. Sponsored content included a Power List interview with Speedway Motorsports CEO Marcus Smith; a Round Table discussion with Travel and Tourism experts; and a Community Close Up of Johnston County, where local investment is attracting foreign and domestic companies.
