The company that hired the most tech workers in May 2018 in North Carolina is a software industry giant that is relatively little known in the Tar Heel state. Redwood City, Calif.-based Oracle topped the list compiled by the N.C. Tech Association, a Raleigh-based trade group that promotes the tech industry.
Many of those hired by Oracle probably live and work in North Carolina without going to an office of the software company every day, says Brooks Raiford, CEO of N.C. Tech. “A lot of companies will hire in areas that have high tech talent, but not because they have an office in that area,” he says. “There are a lot of people in the given location willing to work remotely.”
Bank of America, Wells-Fargo, and Lowes ranked in the top 10 of the hiring list. The three companies employ more than 50,000 people in the Charlotte area, many of whom work on technology projects. “Everyone hires tech talent, not just tech companies. You have people who hold tech occupations, but they don’t work for tech companies”, says Raiford.
There were 22,309 tech job postings listed in North Carolina in May, a 10.9% increase from a year earlier, according to the report. This was the highest number of postings listed within the past year.
The spike in tech employment by Oracle and other huge companies speaks to the desirability and growth of North Carolina, Raiford says.
Oracle is best known for its cloud-computing services. It had revenue of $39.3 billion in the 2018 fiscal year, and employs more than 138,000 people.
