MetLife conference promotes women in STEM

Insurer MetLife is hosting its sixth annual Triangle Tech X conference on Tuesday and Wednesday, aimed at supporting women in STEM professions.

The free conference has had online and in-person formats, and this year will include live audiences at the company’s Global Technology Hub in Cary and NC State University’s Centennial Campus. Professors and alumni from the university will participate in the program.

This year’s TTX keynote speaker is Katie Ledecky, who has won more Olympic and world championship gold medals than anyone. She won two gold medals at the Olympic Games in Paris earlier this year.

Other speakers include executives at major Triangle employers such as SAS, Lenovo and IBM, and N.C. Governor Roy Cooper.

More than 4,500 participants took part in last year’s TTX.

The company’s recent survey on Women and STEM found that about 60% of women find careers in science, technology and engineering to be appealing, which the company said was a 6% increase from a year earlier.

About nine in 10 STEM employers are facing a talent shortage and favor greater efforts to bridge the gap, MetLife said.

New York-based MetLife has large operations in Charlotte and Cary and its head of Global Technology and Operations, Blll Pappas, is based in North Carolin
