Mecklenburg business owner pleads guilty to tax charges

A Mecklenburg County pub owner pled guilty to three felony tax charges, according to the North Carolina Department of Revenue.

An investigation found that Mark Ethridge, owner of Stooges Pub and Grub in Mint Hill, aided and abetted the business to embezzle, misapply and use about $193,212 in North Carolina sales taxes to the company’s benefit from 2015 to 2019.

Ethridge paid $193,000 towards restitution and was ordered to pay the remaining $212. Ethridge was also placed on house arrest for 60 days, ordered to perform 100 hours of community service and placed on supervised probation for 24 months.

Superior Court Judge Rebecca Holt originally sentenced Ethridge to a prison term between 19 and 32 months, but the sentence was suspended.

(Ethridge is not the former Charlotte Business Journal publisher Mark Ethridge III.)
