Serving as a volunteer firefighter taught me a great deal about preparation, service and community. While the job wasn’t always glamorous, we stood ready and responded to every crisis — house fires, brush fires, flat tires and false alarms — with the same sense of urgency.   

Vita: Born Feb. 12,1985, in Southport; bachelor’s and law degrees from UNC Chapel Hill.

Memorable case: In a recent pro bono case, McGuireWoods helped the Federal Defender’s office defend a client engulfed in a prescription-fraud investigation and indicted for obtaining prescription medications “by misrepresentation, fraud and deception.” The client’s legitimate medical need for the treatment was well documented in his medical records, and our numerous expert witnesses supported his position. Our client showed great resolve under immense pressure and media scrutiny during the yearlong ordeal until prosecutors finally dismissed all 24 felony counts against him on the brink of trial. It felt good to chalk up a big win for someone facing a very trying situation. 
 
Passions: Problem solving, storytelling and pulling for the underdog.

Favorite place: A wooden duck blind in Hyde County in late December or a boat floating above big fish.

Heroes: My parents, both lawyers. Now that I’ve joined the profession, I have an even deeper appreciation for their 30-plus years in law and public service.
