TAX/ESTATE PLANNING WINNER
ANDREW H. VEACH, Edwards Craver Veach PLLC, Winston-Salem
My first class at Davidson College was English 101 with Gill Holland. That began my course of study as an English major and my focus on learning to write well and analyze a subject clearly. I was not an ivory-tower academic, flowery writer or poet. Dr. Holland and several other excellent professors taught me to write clearly, concisely and in a style that addressed a topic in a logical, straightforward manner. Learning that type of writing — and the necessary analytic process that leads to it — was invaluable training for law school and practice that focuses on drafting legal documents, communicating complex estate-planning techniques to clients and arguing in support of a particular stance on complex tax laws.
Vita: Born May 29, 1975, in Kernersville; bachelor’s from Davidson College and law degree from Wake Forest University.
What he’d be if not a lawyer: Real-estate developer.
Memorable case: In my first year of practice, I met with a commercial tenant who was in default under a lease. They basically had become a squatter and refused to vacate a building held in an estate we were administering. We finally had to change the locks and threaten to donate the property to the fire department for full-burn training. Estate administration is far from mundane.
Passions: Good food and wine, socializing with friends and playing bridge.
Favorite place: Vacation home in Blowing Rock.
Favorite book: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
Don’t ask him to: Cut corners, miss a fun event with friends or cook.
