I was a youth counselor at Central Raleigh YMCA, initially responsible for groups of 14 to 16 boys in kindergarten through sixth grade and eventually head counselor responsible for all groups.
Vita: Born Jan. 6, 1953, in Raleigh; bachelor’s and law degrees from UNC Chapel Hill; wife, three children and seven grandchildren.
Why he chose to specialize in this field: My initial endeavors were in residential real estate, which typically involved parties that were making the most important purchases of their lives under generally pleasant circumstances. As my practice evolved into development and commercial real estate, I was able to utilize that background as a foundation and had the opportunity to work on challenging and complex issues in a variety of real-property transactions.
Memorable case: Settlement of a lis pendens dispute where my client, a national retailer, settled by paying the claimant what I considered an excessive amount with the simple explanation that the transaction could not be delayed — the cost of settlement represented only four weeks profits for the store in that location. The client’s business goals sometimes trump enforcement of its legal rights.
Passions: My faith, my family, my work, Carolina basketball and golf.
What he’d be if not a lawyer: High-school basketball coach.
Favorite place: Anywhere with my grandkids.
Hero: My wife, Anne, who cared for our daughter and her family while my daughter was sick with breast cancer and for my daughter’s three children, including an infant, for two years after she died.
