There is, in my opinion, a concomitant service obligation associated with the privilege of practicing law, often best satisfied through work with community organizations. Some of my community service includes being past chairman of the board of Cape Fear Museum, past chairman of the board of the Cape Fear chapter of the American Red Cross, a volunteer with the Azalea Festival and a youth football, basketball and baseball coach.

Vita: Born March 31, 1942, in Greensboro; bachelor’s and law degree from UNC Chapel Hill; wife and two children.
What he’d be if not a lawyer: I’d probably teach. In 2006, I was a visiting professor at the law school at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, Poland, and found the experience highly rewarding.
Memorable case: One of the most intriguing involved a pig-breeding business and included a lawsuit in North Carolina, a lawsuit in London and an international-arbitration element. It took me to England, Scotland, Canada and various places in the U.S.
Passions: My family, practicing law, reading, golf and art — in that order.
Favorite place: Home or Bald Head Island with the children and grandchildren.
Recent reading: The Submission by Amy Waldman and Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte.
