Legal Elite – Family 2015

""Legal Elite 2015
FAMILY WINNER

Kimberly Bryan
Cheshire Parker Schneider & Bryan PLLC, Raleigh

Once I started working in family law, I began to enjoy it, and to my surprise I had an aptitude for it. Twenty-two years later, I still enjoy it. Family law is like the ADHD of law. It’s not sufficient to know just family law. I need to know tax law, business law, contracts, bankruptcy, estate and criminal law. I’ve learned about intellectual property, commercial law, real estate, international law. I have to know about psychology, family dynamics, mental-health issues, domestic violence, substance abuse and addiction. Family law issues are on the forefront of dynamic social issues, all of which I need be in tune with. The work I do is relevant. It’s never boring. Undoubtedly, the clients are in an emotionally difficult place, yet balancing the emotions against the business of resolving the dispute is a challenge with rewarding results.

Vita: 56; born in High Point; bachelor’s from N.C. State University and law degree from Campbell University; husband and two children.

What she’d be if not a lawyer: I would like to be Judy Smith, the Washington, D.C.-based crisis-management consultant about whom the ABC TV series Scandal is based. I would be a great crisis manager and spin doctor.

Favorite place: The beach house at Emerald Isle. Pulling up to Shackleford Banks or Bear Island. Stand-up paddleboarding in Bogue Sound. Kayaking though the marsh grass. Biking and walking everywhere.

Hero: My grandmother, Gladys Magnolia. She had a professional career in a time when women didn’t do such radical things. She was a vivacious, gutsy woman. She liked a schnapps every now and again, and sometimes a well-timed cuss word slipped out. She always looked like a magazine ad, dressed in Chanel suits, perfectly coiffed. To her, barriers were just something to crawl over or bust through.
