My mentality during my undergraduate experience was a) one of being as competitive as possible as a vehicle for later-life efforts and b) one of being part of a high-achieving peer group. Both of these helped give me a foundation for law school and the practice of law.

Vita: Born Aug. 15, 1945, in Hopkinsville, Ky.; bachelor’s from Davidson College and law degree from UNC Chapel Hill; wife, three children and two grandchildren.
Why he chose to specialize in this field: I became very interested in it during my service as a N.C. District Court judge.
Passions: Reading, sports, running and biking.
What he’d be if not a lawyer: Teach fine-arts history.
Favorite place: London.
Recent reading: A History of Christianity: The First Three Thousand Years by Diarmaid MacCulloch.
