When you are sailing in a small boat, you have to be very tuned in to the natural world or you will find yourself upside down in the water. It reminds you that you only have limited control and that you are at the mercy of more powerful forces.
Vita: Born May 14, 1958, in Norfolk, Va.; bachelor’s from Duke University and law degree from Harvard University; wife and five children. Why he chose this field: I have always enjoyed nature. Memorable case: I represented a group challenging a state wastewater permit for a sewage-treatment plant. Eventually, an administrative law judge and the Environmental Management Commission overturned the permit. What he’d be if not a lawyer: A Methodist minister. Heroes: My grandfathers. My father’s father was a fireman and locomotive engineer for the Union Pacific railroad. He subsequently became a union leader. My mother’s father was forced off his land in Wyoming during the Dust Bowl and eventually started a successful trucking business in northern Idaho. Both were avid outdoorsmen, and some of my fondest memories are fishing with them in Idaho and British Columbia. Recent reading: Theodore Rex by Edmund Morris and Truman by David McCullough. Although very different, Teddy Roosevelt and Harry Truman dared to challenge conventional thinking. Don’t ask him to: Sit still.
