Legal Elite – Environmental 2014

ENVIRONMENTAL LAW WINNER

Craig A. Bromby
Hunton & Williams LLP, Raleigh

My first full-time job was as a lab technician at N.C. State University. The projects I worked on included the development of sweet acidophilus milk, investigating how mold in cacao pods affects finished chocolate and how to detect mold before the manufacturing process, and determining the optimal time for harvesting muscadine grapes to make wine.

Vita: Born March 26,1949, in Elizabeth, N.J.; bachelor’s degree from N.C. State University and law degree from UNC Chapel Hill; wife and two children with a grandchild due in March.

Why he chose to specialize in this field: It just so happened that my first job out of law school was with the state environmental-regulatory agency, which is now called the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. I never took an environmental-law class in law school.

Memorable case: Assisting the new owner of Orton Plantation in Wilmington obtain permits and approvals — dealing with and coordinating between eight state and federal regulatory agencies — for the restoration of historic rice fields and the establishment of a safe harbor for red-cockaded woodpecker habitat.

Where he’d live if he had to practice somewhere else: Holden Beach.

What he’d be if not a lawyer: A cartoonist.

Passions: Doing interesting and fun things with my family and old friends.

Favorite place: The Musee d’Orsay in Paris.

Hero: Willie Mays.

Don’t ask him to: Go shopping at the mall on Black Friday.
