I have been a member of the board of directors of Golden LEAF, a Rocky Mount-based nonprofit that distributes the proceeds of half the state’s share of the national tobacco settlement, since its creation in 1999. I am a member of the board of visitors of the Institute for the Environment at UNC Chapel Hill and a member of the board of directors of the North Carolina Independent College Fund and at The Pisgah Center Inc.

Vita: Born Jan. 30, 1957, in Bat Cave; bachelor’s from Princeton University and law degree from UNC Chapel Hill; wife, five children and a grandchild.
What he’d be if not a lawyer: Run a business or farm or have a better golf game.
Memorable case: I had a sedimentation and erosion case in which we obtained a verdict of $500,000 after more than a week of trial. On appeal, the N.C. Court of Appeals upheld the liability verdict but sent it back for a new trial on damages. We tried the case again and got a verdict of $775,000. In total, we recovered more than a million dollars for the client.
Passions: My immediate and extended family.
Favorite place: Hickory Nut Gap Farm, which is where I grew up.
Recent reading: George, Nicholas and Wilhelm: Three Royal Cousins and the Road to World War I by Miranda Carter.
