Legal Elite – Environmental 2010

Environmental

Stephen W. Earp Smith Moore Leatherwood LLP, Greensboro

I would have enjoyed owning and managing a small business, particularly in recycling or some other environmental field. Or maybe I would have been a stonemason or a landscape designer. I just like helping little things get bigger.

Vita: Born Sept. 12, 1952, in Danville, Va.; bachelor’s from Davidson College and law degree from University of Virginia; two children. Why he chose this field: I stumbled into it without a great deal of forethought. What I have found is that it combines rigorous analysis of laws with human issues that can evoke tremendous passion. The beauty is that it requires you to use both sides of your brain. Memorable case: It involved helping a company put a commercial hazardous-waste-treatment plant near the Lumber River in Scotland County. The case had everything — challenging scientific and regulatory issues, an inflamed community, political maneuvering, emotional public hearings and national environmental groups weighing in. Passions: Tennis, mission work and building things. Recent reading: A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson. Favorite place: A tennis court. Heroes: My parents, Mickey Mantle, Colin Powell and former partner Larry Dagenhart. Don’t ask him to: Go deep-sea fishing or look over the edge of the Empire State Building.
