My first regular, paying job was managing a produce booth at the local farmers market for my family’s farming business. I had managed the booth before, but in the summers, during college, my dad let me run it with his guidance and assistance and keep the profits for college expenses. We worked the fields and harvested on Mondays and early in the mornings. I purchased additional produce from other farmers and set up and ran the booth Tuesday through Saturday. It was a six-day-per-week job, 12 to 16 hours each day. I learned the value of hard work and bought my first extravagant possession — a leather jacket. It’s out of style, but I still have it as a reminder of how it felt to be able to buy it.

Vita: Born June 18, 1969, in Sanford; bachelor’s and law degrees from Wake Forest University; husband and two daughters.

Why she chose to specialize in this field: I have always been fascinated by human dynamics — how people and groups define themselves and relate to each other — and I love problem solving. This translates into counseling, organization building and dispute resolution in employment law. I love taking a difficult situation and turning it into a positive one or at least helping a client find his or her way to the best available outcome. I love it when my clients say, as one recently did, “Having you alongside me made this bad situation tolerable.”

What she’d be if not a lawyer: A missionary, a retreat leader, a professional coach, a motivational speaker or a theologian.

Favorite place: Home. I love traveling, but I love coming home even more. There is something special about relaxing in your own space, with your own creature comforts, with the ones you love nearby and a dog on your lap.
