In both high school — Hargrave Military Academy — and college I held leadership positions that gave me the self-confidence to succeed as an attorney. At Hargrave, I was a lieutenant and in charge of a dorm. At Wofford, I was president of the Interfraternity Council.

Vita: Born June 24, 1947, in Hickory; bachelor’s from Wofford College and law degree from Wake Forest University; wife, four children and six grandchildren.
What he’d be if not a lawyer: Probably a human-resources executive.
Why he chose to specialize in this field: It is a long story, but the bottom line is people are interesting.
Passions: On a social level, it is education. On a personal level, it is my farm in Burke County.
Hero: I thought about presidents I admire, but it always came back to my dad. He taught me how to manage.
Recent reading: Ike’s Bluff by Evan Thomas and Passage of Power by Robert Caro.
Don’t ask me to: Wear a suit for someone other than a judge.
