Legal Elite – Criminal 2015

Legal Elite 2015

Robert K. Corbett III
The Law Offices of Harold Cogdell Jr. PC, Charlotte

After undergrad but before law school, I had a family member that needed the assistance of a lawyer. In hindsight, I know the attorney was doing all that could be done, but at the time, I didn’t feel that way. Part of the reason I went to law school was that I wanted to be able to help folks. During my second and third year, I was a member of the school’s mock trial team. That experience helped me to realize that I wanted to be in the courtroom.

Vita: 43; born in Charlotte; bachelor’s from N.C. State University and law degree from North Carolina Central University; wife and two children.

Memorable case: I had a case that had just finished up, and the state was about to call another case for trial. The gentleman was charged with a relatively low-level felony and was choosing to represent himself. Based on his comments, I didn’t think he fully appreciated the gravity of the situation. I asked the court for permission to speak to him. Long story short, I ended up representing him pro bono at trial. I like to think he was pleased with the outcome. What I got out of it was a chance to help someone. Not because I was appointed or retained on the case, but just because I was there and wanted to help him.

What he’d be if not a lawyer: Voice-over artist or science-fiction writer.

Favorite book: The Grey King by Susan Cooper. It was one of my favorite books as a kid. I checked it out so many times that the school library banned me from checking it out anymore, and I had to buy my own copy. I mentioned that story to my 6-year-old, and he got me a copy for my birthday last year.

Don’t ask him to: Do anything that he considers illogical or that defies common sense.
