I would like to be a part-time teacher, part-time outdoor guide. Early in my career, I taught some courses at Central Piedmont Community College. It’s fun to see the light go off when students grasp a concept. And I love the outdoors, particularly hiking and biking, and would love to work with newcomers to both.
Vita: Born Feb. 13, 1947, in Gaffney, S.C.; bachelor’s and law degrees from UNC Chapel Hill; three children. Why he chose this field: I was a general practitioner handling criminal cases prior to becoming a district-court judge. When I left the bench, I eventually began practicing criminal law almost exclusively because I enjoyed it. Memorable case: A noncapital murder trial in which my client pleaded not guilty by reason of self-defense. Passions: Reading, hiking the Appalachian Trail, long-distance bike riding, travel and good food and beverage. Favorite book: To Kill a Mockingbird. I always find it stirring and inspirational. Favorite place: Bar Harbor, Maine, and the surrounding Acadia National Park, particularly during lobster and blueberry seasons. Heroes: My parents. My father was a New Yorker who came South while serving in the Army in World War II and fell for my mother, one of the original steel magnolias. Don’t ask him to: Overly organize my life or my work. You might not think I have a system, but I do, and it generally works for me.
