Legal Elite – Corporate Counsel 2015

""Legal Elite 2015
CORPORATE COUNSEL WINNER

Santiago Estrada
Quintiles Transnational Holdings Inc., Durham

I was looking for a way of building an extended, deep relationship with a business client that had a best-in-class management team and an industry-leading profile. I enjoy the complexity offered by transactional work, the diversity of issues that come across my desk and the opportunity to see the ultimate impact of the work performed by our team. Perhaps because of my background growing up in a Latin American household (with parents from Cuba and Argentina), I have always looked for international opportunities in my work. I was incredibly fortunate to land with a company founded in North Carolina that met all these criteria.

Vita: 48; born in Chicago; bachelor’s from Duke University and law degree from Wake Forest University; wife and four children.

Passions: Time with my wife, children and friends, especially if it includes empanadas; the outdoors and most types of physical activity; travel; reading; really, anything that helps me appreciate that I have more than I deserve.

Where he’d live if he had to practice somewhere else: In the U.S., Charleston, S.C., offers a fantastic quality of life comparable with the Triangle and a unique profile compared with other American cities. Outside the U.S., probably London. Buenos Aires, Argentina, would be tempting but a greater challenge from a business standpoint.

Favorite place: Belgrano neighborhood in Buenos Aires, the place of many fond memories with family as a child and adult.

Hero: My grandfather in Buenos Aires, who passed at the age of 93 in 2013. He taught me invaluable lessons both in work and life and was a beloved role model for the entire family. Not to mention that late in life he could memorize the sequence of two decks of cards in one sitting.
