My mentor at Wake Forest always said lawyers want to be ministers and ministers want to be lawyers because you’re both preaching. We’re both advocates. We wear different collars, but it’s pretty similar.
Vita: Born June 15, 1949, in Newton; bachelor’s from Western Carolina University and law degree from Wake Forest University; wife, two children and one grandchild, with another due this month. Why he chose this field: I initially was a litigator for McElwee Hall McElwee law firm in North Wilkesboro. Several cases were for Lowe’s. After about two years, I was asked if I’d like to do some corporate work. Memorable case: I call it the little red wagon case, about a man who had been prosecuted several times for stealing his neighbor’s little red wagon. Passion: Veterans’ rights. Favorite books: Born Fighting: How the Scots-Irish Shaped America by James Webb and The Rocks: The True Story of the Worst Team in Baseball History by Wilt Browning. Granite Falls had a professional baseball team one year, and it won 19 games out of 109. Favorite place: Sitting in a baseball park. There doesn’t have to be anybody there. Heroes: I’m a Dodger fan, especially the Brooklyn Dodgers — people like Duke Snider, Jimmy Gilliam, Gil Hodges, PeeWee Reese, Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale. Don’t ask him to: Lie.
