Vita: 55; born in Nagano Prefecture, Japan; bachelor’s from University of Pennsylvania, MBA from University of San Francisco and law degree from Emory University; wife and three daughters.
Memorable case: Although it wasn’t a construction case, in a 2 ½-week federal jury trial, opposing counsel used an objection “strategy” that included objecting to virtually every question and sometimes the answers, too. After a day or two of this, the judge called counsel to the bench and told all of us that “when a wolf howls in the woods often enough, it becomes a part of the background noise” and then suggested counsel should reconsider his objection strategy. We went back to our questioning, and opposing counsel objected to the next question and never changed his strategy.
Passions: Family, San Francisco 49ers, golf and sailing.
What he’d be if not a lawyer: I would use my accounting and/or finance background, preferably in a startup or entrepreneurial business.
Favorite book: My favorite series is Aubrey/Maturin by Patrick O’Brian, the first of which is Master and Commander. (But the first book was not the best of the series.)
