I am finishing a seven-year term on the board of Capital Towers, a high-rise apartment complex owned by area Presbyterian churches for low-income people in Raleigh. I have chaired Rex Hospital Open Corporate Challenge, a benefit golf tournament, for 15 years and have been a committee chair for the Rex Hospital Open. Both tournaments raise money for the Rex Healthcare Foundation. I hope that I have some impact on the community that I am so fortunate to live in.
Vita: Born July 16, 1948, in Norfolk, Va.; bachelor’s from Davidson College, law degree from UNC Chapel Hill and master’s from George Washington University; wife, daughter and two grandchildren.
What he’d be if not a lawyer: A college head football coach with a special eye toward the offensive side or an athletic director.
Memorable case: It was for a defense contractor from North Carolina. We lost the case on what we believed to be a poorly decided summary-judgment motion at the U.S. Court of Federal Claims. A West Coast member of the board for the client recommended to shift the appellate work to another firm, but the president decided to stay the course with me. The U.S. Court of Appeals, in a unanimous decision, not only reversed the lower court but ordered that it enter a judgment in my client’s favor.
Passions: Golf and UNC sports.
Recent reading: Final Rounds by James Dodson, who is originally from Greensboro and a noted golf writer. The book details the last golf trip to Scotland that he took with his father before his father’s death.
