Legal Elite – Bankruptcy

Bankruptcy

Holmes P. Harden Williams Mullen, Raleigh

Our weekend house near Crystal Hill, Va., is the family homeplace, dating to 1795. I restored it in the early 1990s. Just a two-hour drive from Raleigh, the house has been my bolt-hole ever since. There is no television and no telephone. It is a patient place where many generations of family were born and raised and where 22 of my forebears are buried. It stands for an intangible heritage of family and faith.

Vita: Born Jan. 14., 1956, in Greensboro; bachelor’s from Davidson College and law degree from UNC Chapel Hill; wife and one child. Why he chose this field: Firm management asked me to develop a bankruptcy practice in 1982 when I was a first-year associate. Memorable case: The International Heritage case is about to become 10 years old. We reviewed almost 16,000 claims and saw some professionals and corporate principals prosecuted for what was regarded by the Securities and Exchange Commission and others as a pyramid scheme. We have summoned enough money to pay a significant distribution to claimants, almost all of whom are individuals. What he’d be if not a lawyer: A writer or journalist. Heroes: George Washington and Robert E. Lee for their personal character and devotion to duty and Winston Churchill for his determination. Passions: Weekends in the mountains of northwest North Carolina, American and Southern history, historical preservation, my extended family and grilling outdoors — charcoal only. Recent reading: The Legal Limit by Martin Clark. I’m listening to Bill Bryson’s A Short History of Nearly Everything. Don’t ask him to: Do the Electric Slide.
