The Morehead Scholars program brought me to Carolina. I was accepted to med school at Emory during my junior year and decided to be lawyer after visiting Grady Hospital for a day in Atlanta. My experience at Carolina helped me develop academically and socially but primarily in human interaction — in essence it improved my sales ability. I met my wife, Jane Moore, during my senior year. Carolina has been good to me.
Vita: Born Sept. 1, 1942, in Atlanta; bachelor’s degree from UNC Chapel Hill and law degree from Duke University; seven children and 14 grandchildren (with twins due in February).
Why he chose to specialize in this area: By accident — I became good friends with bankruptcy Judge Thomas Moore while clerking with U.S. District Judge John Larkins in 1969.
Passions: Grandchildren — our youngest, Little Riley, lives with me, breakfast with my buddies, Religious Community Services and racquetball.
What he’d be if not an attorney: Sales — real estate or some financial product.
Favorite places: Pat O’Briens in New Orleans and Umstead Hotel & Spa in Raleigh.
Recent reading: Boomerang by Michael Lewis.
