Antitrust
Mark J. Horoschak Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice PLLC, Charlotte
On the wall in my office, there is a letter from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania granting admission to my father. My father, however, could not attend college because of family obligations and financial difficulties. He never complained but did everything he could to ensure that I received a college education. That letter is a cherished reminder of his devotion and sacrifice.
Vita: Born Nov. 15, 1951, in Philadelphia; bachelor’s from American University and law degree from The College of William & Mary; wife and two children. Why he chose this field: Antitrust is an ever-evolving body of law that spans both transactional and litigation matters. What he’d be if not a lawyer: Shortstop for the Philadelphia Phillies. That is, if I could hit. Memorable case: During my tenure at the Federal Trade Commission, I led a trial team that successfully challenged the merger of two hospitals in Augusta, Ga. It was the first federal-court victory of its kind for the FTC. Passions: Good food and wine, travel and classical music. Recent reading: Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow. Hamilton probably understood economic trends and grasped the potential for the country better than any of our other Founding Fathers. Hero: Ulysses S. Grant. Though unassuming, Grant proved to be a strategic mastermind and a tenacious fighter. He also wrote one of the finest military memoirs of all time. Don’t ask him to: Sing.
