Legal Elite – Antitrust 2014

John F. Graybeal
Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein LLP, Raleigh

I grew up on an 800-acre farm in Appalachia — Russell County, Va. We had a dairy operation, beef cattle and tobacco. During the summers when I was in high school, I helped with mowing and raking the hay, creating haystacks and loading bales and driving the tractor wagon to get them to the barn. I helped feed dairy cows while they were milked and tied tobacco after harvest.

Vita: Born Sept. 12,1937, in Richmond, Va.; bachelor’s degree from Oberlin College and law degree from Harvard Law School; wife, four children and four grandchildren.

Why he chose to specialize in this field: Antitrust was the first, and about the only, law-school course I found tolerable, and the U.S. Justice Department’s Antitrust Division was first to offer me a job.

Passions: Spreading the word about global warming after attending a three-day Al Gore Climate Reality conference in Chicago in July 2013, sailing the Chesapeake Bay, farming, piano, chamber music, opera, playing squash and tennis.

Where he’d live if he had to practice somewhere else: It gets no better than working for the Justice Department or Federal Trade Commission, living in a row house in Washington, D.C., and commuting by bicycle.

What he’d be if not a lawyer: An economics professor at a small-town liberal-arts college or a skipjack on the Chesapeake Bay “drudging for arsters.”

Favorite place: Chesapeake Bay.

Don’t ask him to: Spend long days staring at a computer screen.
