Legal Elite – Antitrust 2012

ANTITRUST WINNER

JONATHAN HEYL, Smith Moore Leatherwood LLP, Charlotte

""

Our firm has participated in various volunteer projects over the years, including Habitat for Humanity, Greensboro Urban Ministry and other ventures. I have served as the pro bono chair of the antitrust section of the North Carolina Bar Association, where we have created several products to assist the public in issues relating to consumer protection and identity theft, including a dual-language pamphlet that we distribute to libraries across North Carolina. I have been substantively involved in the bar association’s 4ALL program since its inception in 2008, including having the opportunity to co-chair the statewide program a couple of years ago and work closely with attorneys across the state in finding more and better ways to provide legal services to the poor.

Vita: Born Oct. 11, 1965, in Athens, Ga.; bachelor’s from East Carolina University and law degree from UNC Chapel Hill; wife and two daughters.
What he’d be if not a lawyer? Perhaps a cartographer.
Memorable case: R.J. Reynolds et al. v. Philip Morris Inc., which was a Sherman Act case involving the retail merchandising, or shelf-space display, programs of the various large tobacco companies. The case went on for years, and I was able to work with, and against, some of the best antitrust attorneys in North Carolina and the country.
Passions: Family, cars and travel.
Favorite place: Hilton Head, because I have lots of good memories of taking my children there when they were young.
Recent reading: Shop Class As Soulcraft by Matthew Crawford.
Don’t ask me to: Play golf. It’s not pretty
