“I’m definitely a fan of action/adventure. Some of my favorites are Raiders of the Lost Ark and any of the James Bond series.”

Vita: 46; born in Monroe; bachelor’s and law degrees from UNC Chapel Hill; master’s from Georgetown University; married with five children. (Wife Kimberly is an attorney with the Internal Revenue Service.)
Memorable case: In a 2014 case, we represented an adolescent who had been denied mental-health treatment despite two suicide attempts. Being able to help her get the medical treatment she needed was incredibly gratifying.
What he’d be if not a lawyer: Either a starving writer or working in the movie industry in some capacity. Most likely a starving writer in the movie industry.
Favorite place: Adelaide, Australia. The city is beautiful and on the doorstep of the South Australia wine region. I was lucky enough to get there in my 20s and have been trying to get back ever since.
Hero: My grandfather. He was a night supervisor in a textile mill in North Carolina and an entrepreneur who opened and ran his own grocery store. He was married to my grandmother for over 50 years and put three children through college at a time when most people did not attend college.
Favorite book: A Civil Action by Jonathan Harr, about the lawsuit brought against W.R. Grace & Co. and others by the families of several children who died from cancer in Woburn, Mass. I reread this book yearly, and every time, I get a different lesson about life and law practice.
Netflix obsession: Turn: Washington’s Spies from AMC. I recently read George Washington’s Secret Six: The Spy Ring That Saved the American Revolution by Brian Kilmeade, so Turn was a natural progression. Both the book and the series are great reminders of the amazing and heroic sacrifices people made to found our country.
Passions: Right now, chasing five kids around. If there’s an opportunity to squeeze in some UNC basketball, that’s always a plus.
