Tech giant IBM will lay off 72 workers at its Winston-Salem location on Reynolds Boulevard, according to a Worker Adjustment Retraining Notification (WARN) filed with the state.
Separations will take place May 30, according to the company.
In January, IBM reported it expected to terminate about 3,900 workers across the U.S. This week, The Register cited unnamed sources in saying the company would terminate about 9,000 workers this year. The Register’s report listed several locations IBM planned to target for layoffs, including New York City and state, Dallas, Texas, and state, California and Raleigh. About 9,000 people work for IBM in Wake County.
“IBM’s workforce strategy is driven by having the right people with the right skills to do the work our clients need. In 4Q earnings earlier this year, IBM disclosed a workforce rebalancing charge that would represent a low single-digit percentage (1.5%) of IBM’s global workforce. This rebalancing is driven by increases in productivity and our continued push to align our workforce with the skills most in demand among our clients, especially in areas such as AI and hybrid cloud,” according to a statement released by IBM Wednesday.
