Greensboro trucking company closing, putting 74 out of work

An Iowa-based trucking company with operations in Greensboro will permanently close after losing the U.S. Postal Service as its primary customer.

About 70% of 10 Roads Express’ revenue came from the postal service, the company told Transport Topics on Monday. The company has approximately 2,600 drivers nationwide, including 74 based in Greensboro.

10 Roads Express filed a Worker Adjustment Retraining Notification with the N.C. Department of Commerce stating that job separations will begin Jan. 30 and be completed by Feb. 28.

Workers in Greensboro are a part of Teamsters Local Union 391. Neither company nor union representatives immediately responded to requests for comment.

The company has started to wind down operations.

“Our industry has been navigating unprecedented challenges, and despite the dedication of our employees and leadership, the realities of the industry have become impossible to overcome,” a spokesperson for the company said in a statement provided to Transport Topics. “This decision was not made lightly, and we are grateful for the years of dedicated commitment and professionalism of our entire team.”

The U.S. Postal Service has been working with the company for close to 50 years. But over the past year, it has revamped its operations in ways that leaned more on brokers and insourcing. 10 Roads was unable to adapt, according to Transport Topics.

Company leadership decided it would cease operations after it was unable to cut back enough to remain viable.

“We remain very appreciative of our long-standing relationship with the USPS and are committed to supporting a smooth transition,” the spokesperson told Transport Topics.

10 Roads has notified the postal service of its decision and says it will work with the agency to provide a transition period.

The company traces its roots back to 1946 when it was a single-truck operation. The company spread across the U.S. as it won public bids from the U.S. Postal Service for truck delivery of U.S. mail, according to its website. The company now operates 36 terminals across the U.S. and has delivery points in 47 states. It has more than 3,500 company-owned tractors and 5,000 company-owned trailers.
