FedEx to lay off 69 workers in Conover

Global shipping company Federal Express plans to lay off 69 workers at a facility in Conover, according to a filing with the N.C. Department of Commerce.

The layoffs will begin on Sept. 3.

This will result in the layoff of 66 couriers and three managers. The affected employees at the location are not part of a union, and no bumping rights exist.

The filing said that some of the workers will remain with the company after Sept. 3, but will work at other locations after that date.

Employees whose positions are eliminated will be provided options to consider, including relocation, severance, or a leave of absence during which they may pursue other positions with the company.

“Decisions of this nature are never made lightly, and are the result of much thought and consideration for the needs of our business,” said FedEx spokesman David Westrick. “Affected team members were notified several months before any changes take place, and are receiving assistance with finding other employment opportunities within the company, including additional support options like relocation assistance or severance where applicable.”

In February, FedEx Ground’s new 259,000-square-foot facility began operation at Wilson County’s Campus at 587 industrial park. It’s expected to have 200 employees.

It also recently opened a 340,000-square-foot facility at Triangle Innovation Point in New Hill.

Memphis-based FedEx has more than 500,000 employees around the world and $88 billion in annual revenue. It delivers about 14.5 million packages a day.

Earlier this week, the company said it wants to cut FedEx back-office and commercial teams in Europe by 1,700 to 2,000 workers.
