FedEx closing Greensboro facility, some of 164 workers will be offered other jobs

Federal Express will close a location less than two miles from Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro, but the company says many of the 164 employees there will be offered other jobs with the company.

The Memphis, Tennessee-based logistics company says the layoffs are related to “Network 2.0, FedEx’s multi-year network transformation,” announced in 2022 to improve efficiency in the delivery of packages. By fiscal year 2027, FedEx expects to operate 100 fewer stations and eliminate more than 10% of pickup and delivery routes under its Network 2.0 plan. Increased efficiency is expected to provide $2 billion a year in savings, according to the company. FedEx has more than 5,000 facilities.

FedEx told employees in May it would close its location at 6035 Old Oak Ridge Road on Sept. 1, according to a Worker Adjustment Retraining Notification (WARN) filed with the state.

“Employees whose positions are eliminated or impacted will be provided with the options to consider transfer to new locations, severance, or a leave of absence during which they may pursue other positions with FedEx. These decisions are never taken lightly and reflect our commitment to supporting affected employees,” the company stated in its notice to the state.

FedEx currently has 11 facilities and more than 1,200 employees in the Greensboro area, according to the company. FedEx employs more than 11,000 in North Carolina.

Workers at the Greensboro location are not part of a union and bumping rights do not exist.

In February, FedEx closed two other North Carolina facilities, resulting in 218 jobs lost in Raleigh and 123 in Durham. In September 2024, FedEx closed a facility in Conover, resulting in 69 layoffs. Some of the employees at those three locations were also offered jobs elsewhere with the company. FedEx employs more than 500,000 workers worldwide and reported revenue of almost $88 billion in 2024.
