FedEx laying off workers in Raleigh, Durham

Federal Express will close an office in Durham and lay off employees at a Raleigh office, resulting in the loss of 123 and 218 jobs, respectively.

Some employees have already accepted new positions at other FedEx locations, says Elizabeth Dillard, a human resources manager. Employees whose positions are eliminated will be provided the option to consider a transfer to a new location, severance or a leave of absence during which they may pursue other positions with Fed Fex, according to a notice filed with the state.

The layoffs at both locations will be effective Feb. 3. Employees are not a part of a union and bumping rights do not exist. FedEx released the following statement:

We recently informed employees that a FedEx facility in Durham will close early next year, and that a facility in Raleigh will have a reduction in staffing. Certain team members will be offered opportunities at other FedEx locations. Decisions of this nature are the result of much thought and consideration for maintaining the high level of service expected from our customers and other needs of our business.”

FedEx, based in Memphis, Tennessee, confirmed to The Commercial Appeal in November that it was reducing its workforce, although it did not provide additional details.

“We made the difficult decision to reduce a small number of positions as we streamline and realign functions. Decisions of this nature are never made lightly and are the result of much thought and consideration for the needs of our business. We are actively working with those affected by these changes to ensure they have the support they need during this transition,” FedEx released in a statement to the Memphis newspaper.

Federal Express announced in June that it would close an office in Conover in September, resulting in the loss of 69 jobs. FedEx employs about 530,000 workers.

Federal Express reported $87.7 billion in revenue in fiscal year 2024, compared with $90.2 billion the previous year.
