Diversified Maintenance is laying off 55 workers in Fayetteville after it lost the contract to clean the Goodyear plant in the city.
The last day for the 55 workers will be June 30, according to a letter filed with the North Carolina Department of Employment Security.
The company said it was unable to give the workers the custom 60-day notice because the contract was “suddenly and unexpectedly canceled.”
J. Tyler Bruce, Diversified Maintenance’s vice president of people operations, says the company notified the union that represents the workers on May 31.
The Goodyear plant processes 40,000 tires each day and employs 2,900 workers.
Diversified Maintenance is based in Birmingham, Alabama, but it has a regional office in Raleigh.
