Cone Health seeks to build $275 million, 46-bed hospital in Mebane

Cone Health will ask the state’s permission to build a full-service, 46-bed hospital in Mebane. If the state approves Cone Health’s plan, Cone Health Mebane Hospital would represent an investment of $275 million and could be completed in late 2028 and open in 2029.

It would be located on Medical Park Drive, adjacent to Cone Health MedCenter Mebane, a facility that offers urgent and primary care along with some specialty services, including a surgical center, cancer center and ear, nose and throat specialists.

The 161,578-square-foot facility would also have 15 emergency department bays, three general operating rooms and imaging services.

A new hospital would help eastern Alamance County residents avoid a 10-mile trip west on Interstates 40/85 to Cone Health’s Alamance Regional Medical Center or travel east on the interstate to hospitals in further away operated by UNC Health, Duke Health or WakeMed.

“Cone Health has led the way in delivering value and better health for over a decade. Cone Health Mebane Hospital will bring the high-quality, affordable care that Cone Health is known for closer to our neighbors in Alamance and Orange counties. I’m excited about the project’s potential to improve the future health of our families and local communities,” says Dr. Yun Boylston, Cone Health board of trustees chair, in a release. Boylston is also a pediatrician at Burlington Pediatrics and Mebane Pediatrics.

The proposed 161,578-square-foot facility would include:

  • 46 acute care beds
  • 15 emergency department bays
  • 3 general operating rooms
  • 1 C-section operating room
  • 2 procedure rooms
  • 3 obstetric labor, delivery, recovery beds
  • 7 observation beds
  • Imaging, ancillary and support services

The state’s Certificate of Need process usually takes between 90 and 150 days. It can take longer if another healthcare provider opposes the move.

Cone Health had $3.14 billion in revenue in 2024 and has more than 13,000 employees, 150 locations and more than 120 physician practices. Its largest hospital, the 628-bed Moses H. Cone Hospital is in Greensboro, along with Wesley Long Hospital and Cone Health Behaviorial Health Hospital. It also has the 110-bed Annie Penn Hospital in Reidsville.

In December, Cone Health decided to become part of Washington, D.C.-based Risant Health. Risant pledged to invest as much as $1.7 billion and provide expertise in value-based care as part of the cashless transaction. Nonprofit system Kaiser Permanente launched Risant in April 2023.
