Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Billy Joel and Sting will perform at Bank of America Stadium next year, adding a second major concert at the home of the Carolina Panthers in May. The Piano Man and Sting will perform Saturday, May 10, 2025.
Tickets will go on sale to the general public 9 a.m. Friday, Oct. 4, at LiveNation.com.
“‘Uptown Girl’ is what the Uptown mayor is going to be like,” said Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles after helping make the announcement Thursday at Bank of America Stadium with representatives from Live Nation and Tepper Sports and Entertainment.
“Uptown Girl” peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard charts in 1983, and the music video featured Joel’s wife at the time, model Christie Brinkley. That was 41 years ago. Both Joel and Sting are now in their 70s.
Big stadium concerts bring hundreds of millions of dollars and contribute to thousands of jobs, while also raising the Queen City’s profile, says Lyles. Eight of the top 10 visitor draws to Charlotte this year have involved events at Bank of America Stadium, and two of the top three – Kenny Chesney and George Strait concerts – were two of the top three.
Neither Joel nor Sting perform live as often as they once did. Joel has shows in only six markets planned for next year. Joel last performed in Charlotte in 2022 and Sting has not performed here in almost 20 years.
Joel ranks as one of the most popular recording artists and respected entertainers in history. The singer/songwriter/composer is the sixth best-selling recording artist and the fourth best-selling solo artist with more than 160 million records sold worldwide. His 1985 compilation album, Greatest Hits Vol. 1 & 2, is one of the best-selling albums in the United States.
Joel’s string of 33 Top 40 hits began more than 50 years ago with his 1973 autobiographical “Piano Man.” Three of Joel’s Top 40 songs – “It’s Still Rock and Roll To Me,” “Tell Her About It” and “We Didn’t Start The Fire” – hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.
Newcastle, England, native Sting move to London in 1977 to form The Police with Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers. The band released five studio albums, earned six Grammy Awards and was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003.
As a solo artist, Sting has received an additional 11 Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe, an Emmy, four Oscar nominations and a Tony nomination. Sting has sold more than 100 million albums from his combined work with The Police and as a solo artist.
The other big act at BoA in May – Metallica, which will perform Saturday, May 31, 2025. Metallica has sold more than 125 albums in a career that began with the 1983 debut album “Kill ‘Em All.”
