Benson, Charlotte and Gastonia get major job announcements

Three North Carolina cities — Charlotte, Gastonia and Benson — secured major econic news totaling more than 1,500 jobs and well over $1 billion in investments.

Here’s a quick rundown:

Benson, located about 35 miles south of Raleigh in Johnston County, received the biggest news in total investment and jobs. Vulcan Elements, which manufactures rare earth magnets used in virtually all electronic devices, including batteries and EV vehicles, will build a facility in Benson that will employ about 1,000 workers earning an average pay of $81,932. Vulcan, which was founded in Research Triangle Park in 2023, plans invest about $918.1 million in its operations by Dec. 31, 2029. It has already received millions of dollars in federal grants.

In Charlotte, global logistics company Maersk will add 520 jobs to its current workforce of about 670 workers as it makes the Queen City its North American headquarters. Those jobs will pay an average wage of $100,962 and involve finance, human resources, legal, commercial strategy and technology positions.

In south Gastonia, Fit Precast will take on a new venture to manufacture precast concrete products. The company plans to invest $71 million by Dec. 31, 2027, to create 125 jobs over the next three years that will pay an average wage of $102,168.
