Amazon hiring 1,000-plus at Fayetteville center

Amazon plans to hire more than 1,000 people at its 1.3 million-square-foot distribution facility in Fayetteville, according to an announcement Friday.

It will quickly become one of the Cumberland County city’s five largest private employers.

At least 1,000 staffers will have full-time roles at Amazon, along with an undisclosed number of part-time workers.

The giant tech company completed the shell of the building last year, but paused its opening until making a public announcement Friday. It starts hiring at 7 p.m. Friday for what it calls an “Inbound Cross-Dock” facility.

Applications must be made online for the jobs at the Military Business Park site at 6309 Bragg Blvd.

Pay will start at $17 per hour, with benefits including medical, dental and vision effective on the first day of employment, according to the announcement.

“Amazon has been 100% transparent with the community,” says Robert Van Geons, CEO of the Fayetteville Cumberland Economic Development Corp. “When they said the project was on pause, it was on pause. Now they have let us know that the project is progressing.”

The development cost of the project was previously reported at about $100 million

“This project is a tremendous milestone for our community, bringing essential job opportunities and a positive economic impact that will benefit all our residents,” said Fayetteville Mayor Mitch Colvin said in the announcement. “The introduction of hundreds of new jobs will invigorate our local economy, support families, and drive the growth of our city.”

“When we’re able to bring economic development projects like this to Cumberland County, it’s not just an investment in buildings and equipment – it’s an investment in our community and our workforce to provide life-changing opportunities, and we are seeing that investment multiplied throughout our county,” said Glenn Adams, chair of the county commission.

In April, Amazon opened a distribution center in Johnston County, just east of Raleigh, that is expected to employ 1,000 people.

Amazon employs 1.52 million people globally and had revenue of $575 billion last year. It ranks as the fifth-most valuable U.S. public company with a market value of $1.8 trillion.
