Heartbreaking is the only way to describe the Hurricane Matthew-related tragedy affecting eastern North Carolina. The brunt of the storm struck the homes of some of our state’s most vulnerable citizens in areas that have struggled economically for years.

The News & Observer reported on ways to assist organizations helping recovery efforts. Let’s commit to help our Down East friends.

Among the ways cited by the N&O:

Gov. Pat McCrory activated the state’s disaster relief fund to support long-term recovery efforts, partnering with United Way of North Carolina, which will administer the fund. Only financial donations are accepted.

To donate, go to or mail checks payable to “North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund” to the governor’s office at 20312 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699.
